GEK1001 – Place, Environment and Society is a Geography related module. I find it so interesting and more engaging that Sociological classes. Only Soci girls are interesting, but the lessons and “strangle me” readings are one of the biggest bitches I ever encountered.

Why not take GEK1001? It’s great, lecturers are so hip and trendy, classes are never boring! The “sight” in lecture halls and tutorial classes are superb. But anyways, let me get to the point.

I am sure Singaporeans have heard of the catch phrase “Uniquely Singapore”. It has been so from the year 2004 until the present time. What the hell is unique about Singapore sia, so small and got nothing to do. Well, if you want to say that she’s unique for the excellent law and order, safe and security, then okay lor. I don’t think I can rebuke that. But heck, these tourism slogans aren’t about such things right?

Why would you come and visit Singapore? Because of it’s law and order, and because it’s safe and secure? Do these play a very big role in choosing a destination? Or would you say, choose a spot for its cultural attractions or geographical landscapes?

Let’s have a look at other slogans from some countries in Asia:

  • Wow Philippines
  • !ncredible India
  • Vietnam: The New Destination
  • Yes Tokyo (Okay so Tokyo’s not a country, but you get what I mean?)

I agree with these slogans. But ‘Uniquely Singapore’ ? Wtf? What’s unique? You call setting world records like “Most number of people in a shopping mall” unique? Wtf man…you’re just giving the terrorists a chance to do bad! And what else? Our fashion is Western/Japan/Taiwan influenced, so I don’t see anything unique. Less you wanna call university undergraduates dressing in t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops for school unique.

TELL ME WHAT’S SO BLARDY UNIQUE because I fail to see the uniqueness!

I think Malaysia’s unique, their food, their culture. They still have kampungs leh, what about Singapore? OH YES, KAMPUNG GLAM. Sheesh.

Hey I gotta tell you…Remember the SARS period a few years back? It was big wasn’t it? Do you know what Hong Kong’s slogan was?

HK SAR: We Take Your Breath Away

Hehe…abit too appropriate I’d say?
