The sequel to my previous post.
The LG KU990 Viewty does not officially support the user installation of new handset themes - but that hasn’t stopped Viewty owners…like me?
At present, there is no officially sanctioned way to download and install new Flash-based themes onto your LG KU990 Viewty.
Just a word of caution: I, or anyone else accepts no responsibility for any damage that hacking into your Viewty to upload a new theme will cause. Installing a new, unofficial theme using these methods may violate your Viewty’s warranty. DO IT AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Backup the contents of your phone. This is vital man. Do this with a software called EFS Media Builder. This software allows you to browse and delete protected directories on your Viewty. Don’t worry, I have scouted the internet for these programs, and I’ll provide you the links to access the necessary files to get your themes up and running!
EFS Media Builder is just the tool used to access the “secret” and hidden directories on your LG Viewty. However, you’ll also need Themes Manager 2.3, which contains the various themes like iPhone, Windows Theme, blah blah and so on.
So what you do is access the “secret” directories I told you about, and basically install these themes into your phone.
Step 1: Download the files from this location. Password: 1234.
Alternative link here.
Step 2: Run EFS Media Builder, and navigate to “LGAPP/Media/swf/theme”. BACKUP “theme_bg2.swf”. If you really don’t want to fuck things up, just backup the whole damn “theme” folder.
Step 3: Choose where you want to install your theme manager.
Installing to Phone Memory: (Recommended by me, for faster accessing!)
1) Edit the “ThemeList.txt” file to make all custom themes point towards the phone memory (//LGAPP/Media/swf/theme/Themes)
2) Navigate to “LGAPP/Media/swf/theme” with EFS Media Builder.
3) Drag and drop “theme_bg2.swf” file and the “Themes” folder into this loction then restart the phone.
4) Navigate to Settings, Screen, Handset theme and pick Silver from the list.
Installing to Memory Card:
1) Install “theme_bg2.swf” into “LGAPP/Media/swf/theme” using EFS Media Builder then restart the phone once done.
2) Navigate to Settings, Phone settings, Connectivity, USB Connection mode and pick Mass Storage from the list then connect the phone to pc
3) Switch USB connection mode to Mass Storage then browse to the Memory Card/Removable Storage.
4) Drag and drop the “Themes” folder from the rar file directly to the root of the memory card.
6) Navigate to Settings, Screen, Handset theme and pick Silver from the list.
Step 4: Installing additional themes (if any)
Perform the following:
1) Create a new folder inside the “Themes” folder and give it a name relevant to the theme you’re about to install.
2) Drag and drop all the new theme files into the newly created folder.
3) Update “ThemeList.txt” to point towards the newly installed theme .SWF files.
Step 5:
So now that you’ve installed it successfully, what do you do? Run it of course. Duh!
To load the Themes Manager, double tap the “C” button (located on the actual handset) to bring up the list of available themes. Use the left and rights arrows, or use the jog wheel, to navigate through the pages and click on the theme you wish you use. Once you have a theme you wish to keep double tap “C” button again to hide the menu.
You can also swap between the built in icon styles by pressing the “Black” or “Coloured” button.
You’re done!

dude nice hax for the phone, where did u DL the themes from?
May 8th, 2008 at 5:51 pm
I surfed for it. It took alot of work, but I’ve compiled it right here to save the world from the trouble of finding it.
May 21st, 2008 at 4:16 pm
when i use the EFS media builder, they keep saying ” can’t open serial port?”. What do they mean?
May 21st, 2008 at 4:20 pm
and how to backup the files?
May 21st, 2008 at 4:44 pm
domnic: Probably they are not detecting your phone through the USB, even when you’ve plugged it in.
Check if you’ve installed the drivers properly (use the installation CD that came with your phone package).
Then, make sure your phone is in ‘Data Service’ Mode for EFS to be able to detect your phone.
How to backup? Well you need to get your EFS Media Builder functioning first, before you can actually explore your phone’s contents and backup the files there.
Hope this helps.

how do you drag and drop files
May 24th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
hey man, really GOOOOOD job, u r a life saver, I think my question is not n it’s right place, but may I ask you these questions
the KU990r version (with the lense cover) is it better than the KU990 ?
and How loud is the speakers volume i mean when the phone rings, is it like SonyEricsson W900i or louder?
thnx bro 4 ur help
G- YIMO
May 25th, 2008 at 12:27 am
chris: In EFS Media Builder, you can’t drag n drops.
To copy phone contents to your pc hdd, use ‘Read’. To write contents from your pc hdd to your phone, use ‘Write’.
May 25th, 2008 at 12:33 am
Yimo:
KU990r? Erm never heard of it, not in my region. Or maybe I just have never heard of it before. But a lens cover would definitely be an advantage, in my opinion.
I’ve never owned a SE w900i, so I can’t really answer you on this one. But the ringtone volume is pretty loud! I set my volume to half of a full blast. Loud enough for me.
Thanks for dropping by all!

If I backup the information from the program Lg PC Suite Backup Tool is that good becouse your program does not work properly.I set my device to data storage and it still won`t recognize it.
May 26th, 2008 at 7:34 pm
Now seem`s to work but… when I access LGAPP/Media/swf/theme I try to select Theme folder and then click Read and I get Download Error theme_bg1.swf/theme_bg2.swf/etc. What is the problem Khaza? You are the doctor in Viewty
May 26th, 2008 at 8:36 pm
Andy:
LG PC Suite Backup Tool (I’ve never used that before though) should work equally fine, because I think it acts like WinZip and zips up all your phone contents into a format only readable by the PC Suite itself.
You should set your device to ‘Data Service’, and not ‘Mass Storage’.
As for your download error, I got the same message when I copied the folder directly to my PC HDD. However, I found out that the solution to this is to zoom in on the problematic file, and transfer that particular file alone.
Try Reading the ‘theme_bg1.swf’, ‘theme_bg2.swf’ and ‘/etc’ individually and separately. It worked for me.
May 26th, 2008 at 11:51 pm
1)My phone is on Data Service as I connect it to my USB port.
2)I tryed to read the theme`s individualy, the whole folder theme`s i`ved selected all of them… i get only errors.
I ask you nicelly to give me your ID messenger to do something good. You could help me 5 minutes .. please. With TeamViewer (I think that as a hacker you know this program) you could enter my computer and see for yourself how this work`s becouse i`m having a bad time doing it.It give`s me error`s every time.I tryed individualy and i`ved selected all …It doesn`t work. Please help me.That`s all I`m bagging you.my id mahu_andrei
May 27th, 2008 at 2:39 am
I know it sound`s stupid but I`m pissed off…I can`t do it,I don`t know how to do it.When you said copy you meant Right Click and Read but it still gives me errors(separately , all selected , the whole folder) it does not work
Please HELP.I have checked the phone is set to DATA SERVICE.I don`t know what to do…please let`s talk on the mess, becouse is the only way to light me up.And I have another challange for you…If you can break somothing.Thank you so much.
May 27th, 2008 at 11:34 pm
Andy:
Sorry for the late reply and thanks for being patient. I don’t use Yahoo messenger, and I’m not a hacker thus, I don’t know what Teamviewer is.
My sources all come from http://ku990.co.uk/ . What I do is simply create new links for people to easily download such files. The experts are there actually
You still can’t solve the problem? I’ve got no idea bro, cos it worked for me. Maybe you could try drag and drop?
Alternatively, you could consider using your memory card to contain the themes instead. But be sure to amend your themeslist.txt to reference the file locations/directories again.
If all else fail, try consulting the peeps at http://ku990.co.uk/ . They’re really helpful. I’m sorry bro I can’t do much! Apologies!
May 27th, 2008 at 11:50 pm
Thank you very much for your help…I said mess becouse it was easyer for us to talk…you replyed me lately.TeamViewer is a program and with it you can look into my computer and solve my problem.I tryed drag and drop… i tryed everything :(.Oh well thank you for you help! You are a good guy…P.S. I tryed to brak you record at 10 fingers … (fast writing) and mine was 82 :P.You are really good.I had an avarage of 69.My keyboard suck`s.Have a nice day.
May 28th, 2008 at 2:20 am
Hey Khazam…I surfed ku990.co.uk and i`ved managed to do something. But I installed the themes to my memory card… you said for better acces i should install direct to my phone memory. You said ,,1) Edit the “ThemeList.txt” file to make all custom themes point towards the phone memory (//LGAPP/Media/swf/theme/Themes)“ How should I do this?Where do I find ThemeList.txt and how do I point it towards the phone memory.I`m sory but I`m to stupid to understaind some things
I`ll wait for you to help me.Thank`s
May 28th, 2008 at 5:25 pm
Andy:
The ThemeList.txt is found in “//LGAPP/Media/swf/theme/Themes”.
How to do it? For example in your ThemeList.txt:
The path is what you should change. Change it to “//LGAPP/Media/swf/theme/Themes/iPhone/theme_bg2.swf”.
May 28th, 2008 at 5:31 pm
Thank you very much..I will try this later becouse now I have some problems.Should I erase them from my card memory before I install them into my phone memory?
May 28th, 2008 at 6:11 pm
Andy:
That’s up to you, as long as you reference the paths accordingly.
But you do realise leaving theme as it is will just take up space
May 30th, 2008 at 2:15 am
tried everthing edited themelist.txt, copied themes folder on to phone memory, overwritted theme_bg.swf file but could able to change background, couldnt able to get icons n stuff.
could you please show us how to install it on memory card and editing procedure for themelist.txt with screen shots if possible please.

FELICIA:
Did you overwrite the ‘Silver’ Theme as required?
Did you activate your ‘Silver’ Theme before double-tapping the C button?
Basically if you follow the steps in my blogpost, there shouldn’t be any problems at all.
June 17th, 2008 at 3:23 pm
i followed every steps in ur blog, but i can only go till the step “double-tapping the C button”. im able to c the list of available themes on my phone, but when i tap on the themes, there is no responses.
also, i dont exactly know what u mean by changing the path to “//LGAPP/Media/swf/theme/Themes/iPhone/theme_bg2.swf”. in the ThemeList.txt, do i change “path = Path to custom theme file”?
thx thx!!!
June 17th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
suzy:
Assuming current path is:
So let’s say your themes are installed into your Phone memory, so you’ll need to reference the path to custom theme file accordingly. Yes you’re right with this.
So it’ll be:
June 17th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
i to dont understand how to add additional themes iv done everything u said and sucessfully got the themes on my fone installing them to my memory card, i press the c button and theme manager pops up but i just cant add extra themes. when u say change the theme.txt is that the one thats in the theme folder and what do i exactly do can sopmeone please help
June 18th, 2008 at 8:27 am
paul:
To add new themes, it’s pretty simple. Assume I dled a new theme called NEWTHEME. What I need to do is extract the contents into my memory card (obviously!), and edit my ThemeList.txt (Yes, it’s the one that’s in the theme folder).
So what I’ll do is add the additional line to my ThemeList.txt:
NEWTHEME themename=”NEWTHEME” path=”//mmc1/Themes/NEWTHEME/XXXX.swf”
NOTE: XXXX.swf is the filename of the shockwave file of NEWTHEME. It differs for each different theme. You must use your own common sense and logic to identify this file (I really can’t help you here. Some things you gotta figure out on your own. Tacit knowledge.)
June 18th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
hello!
your forum has been a great help…
i wanted to know that the theme_bg2 file which we have to drag and drop in LGAPP/Media/swf/theme, from where does this theme_bg2 come from??? because the folder has one already. and the theme folder which comes with theme manager has a number of them.. please help…
June 18th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
ERRU:
The ‘theme_bg2.swf’ that you’re talking about comes from X:\…\Theme_Manager (The place where you extracted the Theme Manager to your HDD).
This ‘theme_bg2.swf’ is the shockwave file for the Silver theme. That is why to effect the hack, you need to be using the Silver theme before doing the “double-tap C”.
However, please BACKUP the original ‘theme_bg2.swf’ before you overwrite it.
BUT if you accidentally overwrote it, you should be able to get the original ‘theme_bg2.swf’ in X:\…\Theme_Manager\Themes\Default.

Jessica:
I’m sorry I can’t help you on the LG PC Suite and the problem with your Viewty. I have passed my Viewty to my dad, and am now using the HTC Tytn II.
June 29th, 2008 at 5:13 pm
Hello,
I have some problems here.
I don’t get what you’re trying to say at
3) Update “ThemeList.txt” to point towards the newly installed theme .SWF files.
I have read all the comments and solution you’ve given but I just couldn’t get what you meant x.x
Do you mean by editing the file names or dragging in the themelist.txt file? lol.
I double press “C”, It show me all the themes but when I press any 1 of it, It doesn’t has any response at all.
I hope you could help me and explain in a more simpler and detailed way ._. thanks alot ya..
June 29th, 2008 at 6:04 pm
Ping:
The reason why the theme doesn’t apply when you click it is because you didn’t reference the themes to the correct directory path.
You should EDIT the directory paths in the Themelist.txt. I don’t get what you mean by dragging, because you need to update the CONTENTS of the file itself!
From a previous reply to suzy, I quoted:
You need to do the same thing too. Suzy managed to solve it, jia you you can do it.
I’ve explained it simple enough, and if you want me to do a detailed one, then it wouldn’t be simple anymore, would it?
June 29th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
You mean double click the themelist.txt and edit the name?
Or create a themelist.txt in every theme folder?
How to update contents of the file itself? lol x.x
Btw, my file, each theme inside all are theme_bg2.swf.
Is it wrong or something?
June 29th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Ping:
Yes, open it up and edit it. How to update? Haiyoh, I already guided you in my previous comment.
Don’t rush it. Read everything, get an overview of the situation, and go step by step.
If each theme folder has the ‘theme_bg2.swf’ by default, then it should be there. There should be nothing wrong.
If a NEW theme folder has a different .swf filename, then you have to reference the path to this .swf filename.
It’s pretty clear from all the above comments. I wish you luck.
July 1st, 2008 at 6:06 pm
Hey ya!
I finally get what you’re saying LOL.
And yea, I did it XD
Thanks a lot for your help ya
July 1st, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Ping:
You’re welcome
July 8th, 2008 at 10:16 pm
G’day mate, you are a clever bloke to work all this out and I really want to make it work on my new phone but….. like Andy I too keep getting a “failed download message everytime I try to read the theme folder OR the individual files. I have tried installing the EFS program on a different program but same problem. Also I can’t see any file called “ThemeList.txt” inside the “theme” folder. Why????? Help if you can.
Thanks.
July 9th, 2008 at 9:55 am
Jim:
Hey there. Hmmm that’s weird. I really can’t figure out the problem.
Could you consult the peeps at http://ku990.co.uk/ ?
As for the ‘ThemeList.txt’, it should be located in the theme folder. If it isn’t there, maybe something went wrong during your extracting/installing process.
I’m sorry mate I’m not much of a help. ):
July 9th, 2008 at 2:30 pm
Ok, I’ll contact those other people. BTW, do you know of any similar programs to EFS that allow you to browse hidden directories on the phone in the same way? It would be good to be able to perform a search for the .txt file I can’t see. Failing that, could you email me a zipped copy of EFS Media Builder in case the one I downloaded was corrupted in some way.
I’m unsure if the problem is computer based or phone based so am trying to eliminate the possibilities. I was wondering if there is there some kind of setting on the phone which I have to enable in order to copy (or see in the case of the theme.txt file) protected files as I can “read” some files higher up the directory tree but nothing in the “LGAPP” folder.
Thanks again for your time
July 9th, 2008 at 3:19 pm
Jim:
Leave your email and description through http://khazampc.com/contact-me/
I’ll send you my copy of EFS Media Builder.
I don’t know of any such programs. If there is, LG.co.uk should have it anyways. And it’s weird why you cannot see the contents of the folder.
July 11th, 2008 at 9:12 pm
hi, just read and downloaded the files but i cant do nothing with the EFS media builder in win rar i cant install it or anything
July 12th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
lee:
You just need to extract the EFS Media Builder and start using it. There’s no need for installation.
July 16th, 2008 at 11:51 am
I Followed all the step. but, when I double tap “C” (Center Button of the LG KU990), nothing happen, Help!
July 16th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
So, Sorry, It’s My mistake. After I repeat the below step, everything work excellence:
3) Drag and drop “theme_bg2.swf” file and the “Themes” folder into this loction then restart the phone.
Thanks for the great work…
July 18th, 2008 at 8:54 am
do you have the backup files of the original theme? mind uploading it one? thnxs a million.
July 18th, 2008 at 11:22 am
hanep:
The originals can be found in “X:\XXX\Theme_Manager\Themes\Default” folder.
July 20th, 2008 at 4:15 am
this may sound stupid, but when starting off where do you get the choice to save to memory card or phone memory?
Cheers
July 20th, 2008 at 10:11 am
Aarron:
You decide now where you want to save to mmc or phone memory.
So what is your decision?
Now, what you need to do is amend the pathnames in your ‘ThemeList.txt” accordingly to effect this.
If you have no idea what I’m talking about, please take your time to read through the whole list of user comments to have a general idea first.
July 20th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
Cheers for the reply, I don’t think i explained it correctly, where do you go to change whether you want it saving to the phone or memory card? Think its currently setup for phone but how do I change it.
Thanks again
July 20th, 2008 at 9:04 pm
Aarron:
My reply still stands. You have to change the pathnames in your ‘ThemeList.txt” to reflect whether you want the program to retrieve data either from the phone or mmc.
Have you opened up ‘ThemeList.txt’ and tried understanding its contents yet?
July 23rd, 2008 at 9:27 am
omg right iv got the double tap c thingy up kk but wen i pick a theme it stays in black theme only every icon is shiney whats happend can i fix it ??? ty for the info

July 28th, 2008 at 12:11 am
gretnorgen:
I think you have to update the pathnames in your ThemesList.txt.
Donditz:
Refer to my post for the download link. jordan has successfully downloaded the files, so I don’t see the problem.
jordan:
You got that while extracting it? Try switching off your Antivirus scans. Or it could be a problem while you’re unzipping it. Else, I’ve got no idea.

July 30th, 2008 at 9:32 pm
@ khairul neezam
this past few days i read lots of forums regarding with efs media builder, at that time i red one comment saying that the efs media builder is a trojan virus, that’s why when you extract the file, it will automatically deleted by your antivirus and you will find nothing on the extracted file so you must turn off your antivirus for a while before you extract it., now i have downloaded themes on my lg viewty, thanks for your help.

You should be able to get the original ‘theme_bg2.swf’ in X:\…\Theme_Manager\Themes\Default.
‘theme_bg2.swf’ is actually the silver theme. So there you have it. (:
September 11th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

scott:
I’m not sure. I was told that ‘theme_bg2.sqf’ is the Silver theme. Try asking the forum guys, because I no longer use the Viewty. And guess what, I didn’t back up mine too
So I’m as clueless as you.

vinod: I’m sorry I can’t help you there. I don’t provide support for anything actually. Viewty themes are hard to find on Google. You need to join the ku990.co.uk forums to get them.
sab: Kindly approach the ku990.co.uk forums, because I’ve never encountered such an error. My apologies.
MOE: I think the EFS only works with cable, because it allows you to direct sync with your phone memory immediately. Bluetooth required you to syns “manually”, which i think isn’t possible yet. I’m not sure of current developments, but from what I know EFS needs cable.
alex: If you follow my steps carefully, you should be able to get somewhere. Follow my instructions and try again. I don’t really know how to help you, because your question’s pretty vague.

mhykhel:
It seems they have moved to http://www.mygreatphone.com. Go to ‘Featured Handsets’, then ‘LG KU990′.
I think the problem with you is that you need to be more resourceful, especially in using Google. And stop being lazy. Read my post. I have already provided the links to download EFS MEdia Builder.
Don’t expect people to spoonfeed you all the time.

the file has a virus on it
October 2nd, 2008 at 12:07 am
AJ:
The software is deemed “malicious” because it allows entry into the system and write changes on it. It is not a virus. This has been explained in the ku990 forums.
I have used it and my computer’s still alive. So do others. Don’t worry.
